Cleanroom blog on particle-free conditions

Thinking error 21: It all depends on

Written by Joachim Ludwig | 16.6.2025

It really depends, because in cleanroom technology there are no answers to the numerous questions that can be answered 100% correctly immediately and without further enquiry. The most frequently asked question is: ‘How much does a square metre of cleanroom cost?’ The answer: you can probably already guess.

And so it works with almost all the questions asked and the answers expected. Here is a small selection of examples:

  • Under which air cleanliness class does one have to produce to ensure that no particles larger than 1 µm can be found on the product?
  • How often do I have to change a HEPA filter?
  • Can I achieve an air cleanliness class of ISO 8 with 2 fan-filter-modules in the room?
  • At what intervals should my cleanroom be cleaned?
  • How often do I have to change my cleanroom clothing?
  • Which cleaning cloth is the best?
  • Can sawing, drilling and filing be carried out in the cleanroom?
  • Do I have to use HEPA filters for my cleanroom solution?

And the list of questions could be continued endlessly. There is no reasonable clear answer to any of these questions without having more information about the general conditions.

Let's come back to the first question about the price per square metre of a cleanroom. It depends:

  • What I want to produce in the cleanroom
  • The total area of the cleanroom
  • What ceiling height is required
  • What temperature and humidity conditions are required
  • Whether cold and/or heat are already present at the construction site or whether these must first be generated
  • What lighting is required
  • What airlock system is required
  • What environmental conditions the cleanroom is to be set up in
  • Which floor is required, e.g. antistatic
  • Which installations need to be carried out in the cleanroom
  • Etc., etc.

We can already recognise that we are dealing with complicated interrelationships with this question alone. In order to resolve these relationships and find an answer, it is necessary to analyse and link information intensively. It takes time and work, which means that the answer to the question of how much a square metre of cleanroom costs cannot be answered in any other way than described above.

Even if someone could give you a price right away, I would be careful.
